Hot on the heels of Worms 3D we have Worms 4 Mayhem! I think that the Worms series does not get the credit it deserves for its jump to the world of 3D gaming. This game was quickly released just a year after the last Worms game to make the jump to 3D. It was released on the PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 2. It was the Xbox version I spent a great deal of time with back in the day.

I Am A Good Looking Worm

The presentation is once again all in glorious 3D. I would not say that the visuals have improved a ton over Worms 3D. However, I do feel that they managed to show even more personality with Worms 4 Mayhem. This is most evident in the way that we have far more control over customizing our Worms than ever before. I spent a great deal of time customizing each Worm that was part of my squad. The whole game has a lot of color and while they did not change a great deal from the last game. I do think that what they have done here is a tad sharper and there is a bit more variety to things in general.

Worms, Ready For War!

Worms 4 Mayhem is just so much fun to play. I liked the gameplay of this series when it was 2D and felt that they managed to translate the series very well to the world of 3D. They did not change much up here at all in all honesty with you and that was the biggest problem most people had with the game. You still need to make a squad and wage war with other Worms to try and prove your military supremacy. There are plenty of weapons for you to make use of and the game did include quite a few new ones and utilities and I found these to be fun. Overall, the gameplay has not changed from what Worms 3D offered. If you liked that you will like this, it is as simple as that. They took all the good from that game, but some of the annoying things like Worms getting hidden behind stuff is still here.

The Weapon Factory

I already talked about how Worms 4 Mayhem had great character customization, but this game introduced the weapon factory which was a very ambitious feature. This allows you to create your own kind of crazy weapons which is a ton of fun. It is always satisfying beating a buddy, but it is even more satisfying when you do it with a weapon you created yourself.

Worms In Time!

The plot of the game is freaking nuts and there are these hilarious cut scenes that move things forward. The single-player mode has a ton of content. It is about going to university and then somehow ending up being trapped in time and having to make your way through history, blowing stuff up as you do. It is great stuff and while challenging, it will make you have a smile on your face the whole time you are playing the game. While I spent most of my time with the single-player, the multiplayer thanks to the vast amount of modes and ways you can tinker with things makes it a very compelling multiplayer.

I know that not a great deal has changed in Worms 4 Mayhem from Worms 3D. However, I am actually fine with that as that was a great game. The single-player content here is better than the original 3D game in my opinion and that more than anything makes this a game worth playing. It is also a great deal of fun to play with your buddies as well. I honestly do not think the Worms series gets the credit it deserves for making the jump from 2D to 3D.

Final Score

Pros:

  • The Worms have even more personality
  • The customization aspect is very well done and fun
  • The Weapon Factory is a great idea
  • I found the single-player mode to be awesome
  • It is a great example of how to take a 2D game and make it work in 3D

Cons:

  • Not much has changed in the gameplay from Worms 3D
  • Worms can still get hidden behind stuff

Worms 4: Mayhem is a 3D artillery[1]tactical and strategy game in the Worms series developed by Team17 and the successor to Worms 3D.

Plot[edit]

The player's team of worms arrives at Worminkle University, where they meet Professor Worminkle, who trains the team to use various weapons. Worminkle then sets the team assignments to sneak into enemy buildings and destroy their construction sites. To flee government agents, Worminkle and the team travel back in time to the Middle Ages using Worminkle's time machine, but the machine gets damaged and they get attacked by wizards and knights. After fighting through them, the team proceed to the Wild West to find gold to keep the machine powered, fighting Boggy the Kid in the process, and to Ancient Arabia to recover jewels stolen by Ali Baboon and his pesky thieves and keep the machine's navigation controls balanced.

After recovering the jewels, Worminkle fixes the machine, but accidentally drops a letter. The team reads the letter, which reveals that the government was planning to build a new research laboratory to replace Worminkle University. Worminkle quickly takes the letter back and continues the journey with the team, but after they stop in prehistoric times, Worminkle betrays the team, telling them he actually used them as part of his plan to escape from the Government. Planning to abandon the team in the Stone Age, he flees, but crashes into a mountain. Determined to catch him, the team battle through caveworms and dinoworms. After reaching Worminkle, the team, knowing of his betrayal, steals the time machine from him and travels back to the present day, leaving Worminkle trapped in the Stone Age forever and panicking.

Gameplay[edit]

Gameplay follows on that of Worms 3D, in which teams of worms take turns to use a variety of weapons and items in order to eliminate the opposing team(s). New features include the ability to customize their worm's appearance as well as create their own unique weapons in a new feature called 'The Weapon Factory'. The game also contains a shop where players can buy various items, using points won by completing story missions, challenges, or unlocking trophies. Shop items include new maps, new accessories and attire, personality banks (voices) and game styles.

Worms 4: Mayhem received mixed to positive reviews. Critics[who?] generally criticized Worms 4: Mayhem for its lack of difference from previous 3D Worms games, difficult controls and illogical AI. However, the range of weapons were praised for including new and existing weapons, along with the level design.[citation needed]
